How Solar Panels work?

Solar panels capture energy from sunlight and turn it into electricity that can power your home, or even be sent back to the National Grid. It's a clean, renewable way to reduce your energy bills and your carbon footprint.

how solar work_edited.jpg
  • The sun gives off light, even on cloudy days

  • The cells on the panels turn the light into direct current (DC) electricity

  • The current flows into an inverter (normally placed in the loft), which converts it to AC electricity that is ready to use in your property

  • The current is fed through a meter and then into your consumer unit

  • Your system will automatically use the free electricity you've generated, then switch back to the grid as needed

  • Any electricity you don't use is either stored in a power wall battery (if you own one) or exported to the grid

Are Solar Panels worth for my home?

UK energy prices have risen over the past 3 years (from £0.18 to over £0.25 per Kilowatt-hour), and with costs remaining unpredictable, solar energy is a smart financial choice, providing a reliable energy source year after year.

Solar panels help you take control of your energy bills. With low maintenance and a lifespan of 25+ years, it’s an investment that pays off.

Whether you're planning for retirement, thinking about your legacy, or simply want to make your home more self-sufficient, solar offers peace of mind.

With government schemes like the Smart Export Guarantee, you can even earn money back on the energy you don’t use.

"Is Solar right for me?" We answer the frequently asked questions

Do I have enough space?

The average solar panel system is around 3.5 kilowatt peak which covers 10 to 20m2 of roof surface area. A terrace house roof size is normally 50 m2.

Does my roof face the right way?

South-facing roofs get the most sun and are best for solar panels. East or west-facing roofs still work. We don't recommend using north-facing ones.

Can I put the panels on a flat roof or garden.

Yes, you can install solar panels on flat roofs, in-ground mount systems in your garden, or on your garage or shed.

Do I need permission to install solar?

Solar panels on houses are considered ‘permitted development’ and don’t usually need planning permission. Speak with us to find out more.
